about

‘Fear’ opens with the lines: “Walking back through Finchley. Saw some blazer boys dancing at a garden party”. From the start, we’re hooked, locked in for another observational songwriting delight. James continues through the first verse accompanied by his guitar’s quick strums before the band joins him for a foot-tapping, r&b styled groove that is vibrant and relentless until the end. In ‘Fear’, we have another lost protagonist, who has issues with gentrification: “They turned my town hall into luxury apartments. Got you all moving in, turn the pubs into wine bars”. As the track nears its end, James sings with anguished vocals: “Burn the names of cinemas from the yellow pages. My achievements span the ages” with tongue in cheek humour of Warren Zevon. Incisive conversational led lyrics are packed into verse after verse. With no chorus in the song structure, ‘Fear’ is an unusually excellent pop song.

lyrics

Walking back through Finchley
Saw some blazer boys dancing at a garden party
Drinking chilled white wine by the marquee
And I wouldn’t wanna dance to their type of music,
So I’m not going to dance to their type of music

Then I sparked one of them in the face
It don’t matter, it’s alright I made him see it my way
One of them showed me to the door
Two coats nothing more, I just got what I could and

Fucked off to the offie,
Saw some city boys geared up on after dinner coffee
Speaking too loud into a mobile,
No they wouldn’t raise a hand, hey it’s not their style

But they’ve got picture phones that go off in the night
Next stop my face behind a window and a bobby’s blue light

What the fuck are you doing round here
Ain’t got time for you type of people down here
They turned my town hall into luxury apartments
Got you all moving in turn the pubs to wine bars

But they wont stop with one, it’s so much fun
Just wanna smash his head in, in his pin striped jacket

Saw a few kids down by the corner
Looked at us and started quick talking
Dropped his chips and started quick walking
‘Well I swear to you I ain’t got no phone or nothing’
Well son, you got a fucked face coming
And he didn’t listen, he didn’t heed
All our careful reminders, all our good deeds

So we took him away from the others
Started calling out for his older brothers
And we looked down to see what we had found
Just one lost kid, a few coins on the ground

And a hate so clean, no I don’t mind
Just wanna beat the shit out of a pretty boy twice my size

And even the streets started talking
It’s a he, he’s a twat, always chats complete crap
But I’m not too fussy about company
Just watch the TV, put things in cages
Burn the names of cinemas from the yellow pages
My achievements span the ages
And if something comes on TV that I don’t like
I don’t stand idly by or take it in my stride
No I turn the channel
Yeah turn the channel

Turned the channel so many times, no I don’t know who I am, tell me who am I
All you’ve got is fear, Fear Fear Fear
Turn the channel
Fear Fear
Turn the channel
Fear Fear
Turn the channel
Fear Fear Fear
Turn the
